What is Drug Addiction?

Drug addiction is one of the most dangerous diseases in the world

Drug addiction is one of the most severe diseases that disrupts the normal functioning, causing serious harmful effects. It is marked by compulsive involvement in rewarding stimuli, leading to adverse psychological, physical, and social consequences.

Ongoing substance use can cause significant changes in brain function, leading to compulsive drug abuse, substance dependency, and addiction.

Over time, drug addiction destroys vital brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex – the brain’s centre in charge of decision making, planning, and social behaviour and the amygdala, which is the brain’s emotions processing centre.

Health Consequences of Drug Addiction

So, substance abuse can have severe short-term and long-term health consequences such as lung disease, heart disease, stroke, and cancer. In addition, drug abuse can trigger or aggravate existing mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and schizophrenia.

If not treated, drug addiction can lead to death. However, if it is diagnosed early, it can be treated successfully. Therefore, the key to dealing with drug addiction is to treat it as early as possible.

Social Consequences of Drug Addiction

Another significant aspect of drug addiction is social behaviour. Namely, addiction can cause difficulty coping with everyday situations and social interactions. Addiction affects the person’s ability to self-regulate and maintain meaningful relationships.

Even though an addict may have a hard time dealing with social and interpersonal issues, this doesn’t prevent them from engaging in risky behaviours while under the influence of drugs. Engagement in dangerous activities can severely affect the addict’s ability to function well in their daily activities, jeopardize their and other people’s safety, or even lives.

Therefore, it is essential to seek professional help. In addition to addiction treatment, an addict should also seek drug addiction therapy from a mental health professional to discover and deal with underlying issues.
